Philosophy may speak of the natural standpoint and intentionality. Psychoanalysis might now speak of the social face and the core, an interactive field of meaning and knowledge. That pretty much covers it, for us!
(Brentano (1836-1917) stated that a mental phenomena is directed at an object; mental phenomena "include an object intentionally within themselves." Wilson points out that the important word here is intentionally, ie, it is not passive but active and purposeful. The discoverer of the "intentionality of consciousness." Then with Husserl (1859-1938) you get Phenomenology, which in short, is the study of the way that consciousness perceives objects.)

There is a level of interpretation here: no question about that. Taking it to the personal level though. We see what happens if we start off with the "idea" way . . . the division . . . elements separated off, could be nasty. If one starts off like the blind men and the elephant, with parts of the whole, there can be a more constructive interaction possible. There is a function here too, "intent."
Yes, by changing the emphasis, moving out to the rational . . . true, one doesn't have to be a scholar here, but the divisive mind is in the foreground in our culture here . . . we end up with the core, the intrinsic, and an "interactive field of meaning and knowledge." It almost difficult to step up to the plate here, and say we are at this interactive point of power, integrated.
Basically, as far as I'm going, I'm considering what may be happening from that "core point," rather than the other interpretations of what may be going on, like the dangerous unconscious, the opposite, etc. We're really at a point greater than the typical source of other things brought up, like sex, the shadow, difficult feelings, etc., which are basically a result of "the choices not made." There's a greater overall purpose to things like symbolism, knowledge, maturity. What's authentic and inauthentic takes on enhanced meaning, more than the generic, and when people are seen in this light, they may not want to be. Spirituality gets some added boost here too.
Makes some good sense of the reasons for symbolism and dreaming . . . what's there at our core, what's intrinsic . . . an overall sense of purpose and evolution. Not just other aspects of the same self, but an unfolding of a Greater Self!!

Personal, but not divided off from things, like the ego . . . touching upon and encountering many other elements within the ground. Paths here.
***
Modes of action . . . finding paths in the previous separate modes, One may still have a social face, for those who only think it is oneself,; but there is a core, with interaction with those greater elements.
To move out of that position, of something hidden, like something bad, nasty, the opposite; to an interaction, with all these other elements "in potential". Path, meaning, is a real change. There's just different starting points and functions. We're integrated, not self-divided.
Paths were a big issue for me. Now I see how they can fit in. Paths of the Warrior . . . a scout for the more intrinsic paths.
Surprisingly, I was doing well back then, when I had inklings of this stuff. You were the one's bringing it down to the lower levels of interpretation. lol! Now, despite problems, is that a Warrior task or what!?

Touching Upon the Second Gate of Dreaming

My dreaming has taken off on new directions. Putting my intent upon certain items popping up in dreams has lead into other directions.
I went with a friend and her daughter to a sacred site, a geographical area close enough to where I live. That night I had an image of her daughter running through the fields, as she does. But as I looked the scene, she changed into a cat, like a bobcat, bounding around. As I looked closer to the vegetation, then zoomed into a rock, I heard a voice saying, "You're viewing me in my more natural form."
I remembered when I seen some orbs. As I drew that image into my mind, I suddenly zoomed a more breathtaking experience. It was like I seen a huge mansion or temple in the clouds.
To make a long story short, its the typical second gate of dreaming, in which one uses items of a dream to trigger another dream, as I reestablished by looking to the information on the net.
That was Castaneda, but I found another tack, similar but unique. The Four Gateways of Dreaming in Tibetan Dream Yoga. http://www.spiritofmaat.com/archive/may3/gateways.htm
This was a synchronicity for me, for my recent understandings, and these teachings are closer.
I'd say something like, my rules of thumb (check out my Yuku blog):
A Being of Intent . . . with Intent, Interconnection, Reality . . . the obvious standard.
The figure/ground . . . the "interactive field of meaning and knowledge" . . . may provide a handle for interpretation.
(This was what I had to work on, getting the proper orientation within my way, and deal with what else is going on.)
Engaging form . . . realities . . . an interactive field of meaning and knowledge.
Modes of self-hood are here. Observer and observed are in sync.
Dreamer . . . for instance?
Tibetan Dream Yoga begins with attention and knowledge, their first and second gates."Learning to become attentive to the energy that animates life if the first Gateway . . . " "Attentiveness is understood by perceiving the energy behind the form as opposed to the outer shape or appearance." "When we move beyond our sensory perceptions that are stifled by our filters, we engage a different Self. This Self perceives with the sixth sense or intuition. When we don't do anything, and we quiet the mind, this Self provides hunches or intuitions about what is really happening. This signifies that we have stepped through the first Gate of Dreaming and become attentive." "When we become attentive, we begin to pay attention to reality." "Being knowledgeable means not relying on past experiences or someone else's knowledge or opinion. We learn to move into the inner source of knowledge, totally bypassing all of the filters, and learning to perceive energy through intuition." "We become knowledgeable by finding the Source behind the dream. We perceive knowledge intuitively through the Dreamer of the Dream or the Dream being."
etc.
Worthy surprise information for me in many ways.

The Great Mystery . . . of the World and Self.
A being of intent with an interactive field of meaning and knowledge.
We can touch the world and self with intent . . . apply intent to our dreams. Like touching upon the many aspects of a much greater and more sophisticated symbol. Unravel and discern our more extended nature.
Peruse the hidden aspects of self and world . . . consider the forms of and shapes of beauty . . . discern the ways and items considered special or Sacred by other groups of people . . . see beyond the camouflage of beings . . .gain knowledge and action in the greater worlds.
So, there's a lot of options here . . . going beyond the taking of the separate positions, not connecting or seeing.
This full circle . . . Shankara could be suggestive here. Working through the two aspects of identity, the Self and Ego, and back. Sorting out the two layers of identity.
This is where I'm at . . . I had a compensation for the battles in the separate modes, but now realize there's some higher options too. Where one starts, not just one or two conflicting options, but a multidimensional potential. Many aspects of the greater life to experience. Discern the difference between Selves and Egos.

Moving past "appearances" . . . into the deeper purposes and meanings, interconnections, etc. When one takes a "look" and four or five things come up, knowledge is increasing.
Not necessarily to the essence of things, but the doors are opening. It was the "psychological perspective" that I was looking to first, for I was drawn in here . . . "a being of intent within an interactive field of meaning and knowledge" re-did it. Puts dreams, symbolism, psychoanalysis, personality, etc., into a perspective I can relate to.
May be learning how things are working at different levels as well.

Informative, that simple stance of outer, which controls, and inner, with other aspects that are struggling for expression. But its not just an impotent inner, where we are stuck . . . its the field . . . where we are free. Rather than choosing this or that, the field seems like a good rule of thumb, for all those dramas are within that anyways. OK . . . past good . . . past bad . . . to the essence. Sorry girls, sorry guys . . .
I had a rant about the generic positions people come up with . . . and then your simple looking backwards . . . but it got me thinking . . .
In any one situation . . . how its often been presented as one of a few options . . . antagonist and protagonist, for instance. If its something we don't like, fight or flight. The bifurcation of nature. But then I realized, if we approach it with intent, there is a multidimensional aspect to the interpretation, like many facets to the diamond, or aspects of a much greater and sophisticated symbol. There is that part of oneself, the situation, the possibilities. There's something much more, and this can open the door to our deeper more extended nature as well.
(Bifurcation of Nature: (Metaphysics): Whitehead's term for a tendency in modern philosophy to divide reality into two parts and then assign to them different degrees of reality. One version distinguishes primary qualities from secondary qualities (such as color), and then assigns primary qualities to the physical world and secondary qualities to subjective experience. Another version separates nature apprehended in awareness and nature that is the cause of awareness. A further version distinguishes between sensations or sense-data and things. Whitehead claimed that this practice is mechanistic and a fallacy of modern philosophy. His philosophy of process is intended to overcome these divisions by exhibiting in one system the interrelations of all that is observed. “What I am essentially protesting against is the bifurcation of nature into two systems of reality, which, in so far as they are real, are real in different senses.” Whitehead, The Concept of Nature)
How about wondering about her darkness, and the way she was doing things . . . looking, and grabbing it all and putting it into a bag? I looked back again, and saw there was construction being done.

This multidimensional drive . . .
How about putting situations into a different perspective? A reinterpretation, or a presentation in a different light. Like a drama, work of art, reinterpreting, putting it in another way, including oneself in a different role, modes of action. One experience presented this as if I was struggling with some force. Then there was a fear, as if something was following me.
Moving past a situation where one may have stopped before, agreements were made . . . too easy . . . into something that looked like a rigorous hike, with me changed, looking, feeling like a leader of a group struggling up a hill, or whatever.
Coming out of these there was an emotional change, a feeling of amazement, exhilaration.
Like looking into the hidden nature of things . . . seen something. Eventually it was like I saw this other aspect of myself, doing this work, in the wings, shady, but with some lights as part of the kit here.

Interesting . . . remembered one has to go beyond the events of the day, that one may be embroiled in. Seen various things opening-up . . . an open field, with new sprouts of grass, with old houses symbolically around. Felt like i was sizing up the situation I was in, like feeling the edge of the wall, feeling upwards, looking up. Seen a blond women on the outside of a newer building, like my condo, involved in some task, with a big curl of yellow wire or tubing piled up next to her.
